Degree thesis
The search for degree theses for study purposes is very frequent and the University Historical Archives can satisfy it, after verifying their existence and conservation conditions.
Theses can be found:
- in the UniTesi database (2009-present)
- in the University Archives (1890-1903; 1910-2009)
- in the National Library (1738-1865)
How to request a consultation
To request access to the theses preserved by the University, both in paper and digital format, you need to fill out the form available on the page Forms.
Students and undergraduates must enter the personal details and email address of their contact professor/supervisor in the appropriate form., who will automatically receive a copy of the request for information. The involvement of the teacher in order to consult the theses preserved by the Archive was foreseen by the Teaching Commission of the Academic Senate on 12 December 2017.
The consultation of paper theses takes place only in our study room, where the requested theses are transferred from the storage rooms (outside the Rector's Palace) within a few days. Please remember that reproduction, in any format, is permitted only with the author's prior authorization.
To consult the theses from the period 1738-1865, however, it is necessary to personally contact the National Library.
The database is available on the University portal UniTesi, an electronic archive of the theses delivered online starting from 2009 which is progressively fed according to a service adoption plan defined by each individual Faculty or Department. Title and content of the abstracts are uploaded by students under their own personal responsibility and are published by the service after 90 days from the date of registration of the information.
The degree theses preserved by the University Archives date back to since 1920 (from the 1910s only for the Royal High School of Applied Studies in Commerce, then the Faculty of Economics) and today they exceed 200,000 unit. Consult the catalog at this link.
The theses of previous years were destroyed in 1904 for theflooding of the Secretariat premises, caused by the extinguishing works of the fire that broke out in the University Building inside the National Library. Of that nucleus, only 74 theses on Medicine and Surgery survive today (from 1890 to 1903), preserved in the Historical Archives.
Further serious losses were caused byflooding of the Dora Riparia in October 2000. Look at the video.
It is specified that the Archive does not store doctoral theses, by law deposited at the two central National Libraries of Florence and Rome, and at the National University Library of Turin.
A collection of ancient printed dissertations starting from 1738 until the 1860s it is currently preserved by the National University Library, the library historically located in the building in via Po 17.
These are dissertations presented for the achievement of the licentiate, the doctorate (degree) and the aggregation to the three Colleges of Theology, Law and Medicine, the consistency of which is a few pages and in which the development of the topic, in accordance with the regulations in force, takes place in points, which are then the subject of public dispute.
As printed works, their deposit at the Library was considered mandatory by the legislation then in force in the Savoy State. Of these, the theses up to 1830 have been the subject of a computerized cataloging project and can be searched in the OPACs. For the following years, until 1865, only a few works of which lists exist are preserved.
