Pietro Toesca and Lionello Venturi

Enrica Galimi, "Teachery and cultural action of Lionello Venturi in Turin (1915-1931): a journey through the documents of the historical archive" master's thesis, University of Turin, a.y. 2011-2012

The figure of Lionello Venturi has already attracted the attention of many scholars, due to his originality and charisma. Assisted by Professor Franca Varallo, Enrica Galimi reconstructed not only his activity as a teacher at the University of Turin, but also his influence and centrality in the cultural world of Turin. A selection of the numerous documents consulted in the University's historical archives, including the personal file, is transcribed and reproduced in the documentary appendix.

Clizia Zancanella, "The history of art at the University of Turin: Pietro Toesca and Lionello Venturi" master's thesis, University of Turin, a.y. 2011-2012

The approach of Clizia Zancanella's work is different, as she, under the guidance of Professor Chiara Gauna, focused her attention on the newly created chair of Art History at the University of Turin and on two personalities who - each according to their own conception of the subject - contributed to giving it shape and dignity: Pietro Toesca (1907-1914) and Lionello Venturi (1915-1931).

Also in this case, the detailed analysis of their students' degree theses, degree reports and institutional correspondence made it possible to better outline the study methods proposed by the two teachers and which gave life to the modern concept of art criticism.
